Rembrandt in Santa Ana
Beggar sitting on a hillock with his mouth open Rembrandt van Rijn
On a recent field trip, grandma, Hannah and Kristen and I saw Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings exhibit at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana featuring 35 etchings — some only an inch tall.
It made us wonder how something so tiny could have survived over 300 years. On a website devoted to Rembrandt, there is information about the 17th century Dutch and how devoted to art they were.
Though the etchings sold for pennies at the time, thy would have been highly regarded because of Rembrandt’s renown, even at a young age when he was focusing on the the poor as his subjects.
You can see all the images on the tour website (here).
So, I’m thinking Rembrandt may have been one of the original affordable artists. And if selling affordable art was good enough for Rembrandt…
