I’m lucky to be close to Palm Springs and even luckier to have a friend in Amy that invited me to see this French film during the recent festival. Oh, I liked it!

The plot, involving a hotel maid in the South of France (oui!) trying to break out of her station in life by learning chess resonated with me. Plus, I’m a big Kevin Kline fan.

So, two thumbs up! And if you see it, don’t mind that the main character, played by the luminous Sandrine Bonnaire rarely smiles. Her killer, French movie star looks have to be hidden to make her believable as a maid.
